Tax help for Jersey City residents who work in two states
Many Jersey City residents work for banks, trading firms and tech companies in Manhattan, or for the financial firms along the Jersey City waterfront. That often means returns in two states, equity compensation and bonuses, and remote work days that need to be tracked carefully.
Ryan works with clients in Downtown Jersey City, Paulus Hook, Newport, Exchange Place, Hamilton Park, The Heights and Journal Square.
Common situations in Jersey City
Living in New Jersey, working in New York
You file a New York nonresident return and a New Jersey resident return, and the New Jersey credit for New York tax has to be calculated correctly.
Remote work days
New York can tax days you work from home for a New York employer when it is for your convenience, so your day count affects both returns.
Working on the waterfront
If you work for a firm in Jersey City itself, your wages are New Jersey income only, which keeps your filing simpler.
Renters and condo owners
New Jersey offers a property tax deduction or credit on your state return, and renters can qualify too, since part of rent is treated as property tax.

Taxes for Jersey City residents
If you live in New Jersey and work for a New York employer, you generally file a New York nonresident return (Form IT-203) and pay New York tax on that income, then file your New Jersey resident return (Form NJ-1040) and claim a credit for the tax paid to New York on Schedule NJ-COJ. New York City resident income tax does not apply to you.
New Jersey also runs the ANCHOR property tax relief program for homeowners and renters. It is applied for separately from your income tax return, so it is easy to miss.
Tax rules and rates change. Confirm the current rules with the tax department before you file, or ask Ryan on your first call.
