Tax help for Nassau County families, commuters and owners

Many Nassau County residents commute into Manhattan on the LIRR, run businesses on Long Island or moved out from the city to raise a family. Living outside the five boroughs means no New York City income tax, but Nassau property taxes are high and planning still matters.

Ryan works with clients in Garden City, Great Neck, Manhasset, Port Washington, Rockville Centre, Massapequa, Long Beach and across the county.

Common situations in Nassau County

Moving out of the city

In the year you move from New York City to Nassau, city tax applies only to the part of the year you lived in the city.

Property taxes and the SALT deduction

The federal cap on deducting state and local taxes was raised starting in 2025, with a phase-down at higher incomes, so whether to itemize is worth checking each year.

Long Island business owners

Self-employed residents can owe the MCTMT, and the right entity structure can change how much self-employment tax you pay.

Commuters with equity pay

Working for a Manhattan employer from Nassau means New York State tax only on your wages, but RSUs and bonuses still need planning.

Taxes for Nassau County residents

Nassau County residents do not pay New York City resident income tax, but they do file New York State returns. If you are self-employed and your net earnings from self-employment are over $50,000, you may owe the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax (MCTMT) at 0.34%.

With high property taxes, the federal deduction for state and local taxes matters more here than in most places. The cap was raised starting in 2025 and phases down at higher incomes, so Ryan checks each year whether itemizing saves you more than the standard deduction.

Tax rules and rates change. Confirm the current rules with the tax department before you file, or ask Ryan on your first call.
