Common situations in Queens
Two-family and multi-family homes
Rental income needs to be reported, expenses split between your unit and the rental unit, and depreciation taken on the rental part of the building.
Family businesses
Owners of family businesses need accurate books, the right entity setup and a clear plan for how owners and family members are paid.
Long Island City professionals
Newer residents in Long Island City often have equity compensation and bonuses that need planning before the year ends.
Supporting relatives
Claiming parents or other relatives as dependents has its own rules, and so does helping them with their own returns.

Taxes for Queens residents
As a New York City resident, you pay city income tax of 3.078% to 3.876% on top of New York State and federal tax. There is no separate city return. The city tax is reported on your New York State resident return.
If you sell a home you have owned and lived in for years, you may be able to exclude up to $250,000 of the gain, or $500,000 for married couples, if you meet the ownership and use tests. Any part of the house you rented out or depreciated is handled differently, which matters for two-family owners.
Tax rules and rates change. Confirm the current rules with the tax department before you file, or ask Ryan on your first call.
