A Manhattan CPA for high earners and their families

Manhattan is home to many of the law firms, banks and tech companies Ryan's clients work for. Clients here often have high W-2 income, year-end bonuses, RSUs and K-1s from investment funds, and they want a plan in place before December rather than a surprise in April.

Ryan works with clients in Midtown, the Financial District, Tribeca, Chelsea, the West Village, the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side, along with former Manhattan residents who still have New York income.

Common situations in Manhattan

RSUs and bonuses

Withholding on RSU vests and bonuses is often lower than the tax you actually owe at Manhattan income levels, so a balance due in April is common without planning.

Co-op and condo owners

Co-op shareholders can deduct their share of the building's mortgage interest and real estate taxes, using the figures on the annual statement the co-op sends.

K-1s from funds and partnerships

Investments that send K-1s often arrive late in the season and can create filing requirements in other states.

Leaving the city

If you move out of Manhattan during the year, you file as a part-year resident. Keeping an apartment here can still make you a New York resident for tax purposes in some cases.

Taxes for Manhattan residents

As a New York City resident, you pay city income tax of 3.078% to 3.876% on top of New York State and federal tax. There is no separate city return. The city tax is reported on your New York State resident return.

If you freelance or run a business in Manhattan as a sole proprietor or partnership, the city's Unincorporated Business Tax (UBT) can apply on top of your income tax, with its own city return. Self-employed residents with net earnings from self-employment over $50,000 may also owe the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax (MCTMT) at 0.60%.

Tax rules and rates change. Confirm the current rules with the tax department before you file, or ask Ryan on your first call.

Manhattan tax questions

Yes. Ryan reviews your vesting schedule, the withholding on each vest and your other income, then projects what you will owe so you can adjust withholding or estimated payments before the year ends.

In the year you move, you usually file a part-year resident return, and city tax applies only to income from the part of the year you lived in New York City. Ryan also checks whether keeping a home here could still make you a New York resident.

Yes. Manhattan is where Ryan is based. Ryan works with clients there virtually by phone, video and secure document upload.

No. Ryan's firm is fully virtual. You upload documents securely and meet with Ryan by phone or video. If you live in the New York metropolitan area and would like to meet in person once before becoming a client, Ryan is happy to meet for coffee or lunch.

Each service is a fixed fee based on the work involved. Ryan goes over pricing on your first call, after he understands your situation.

No. Ryan is a CPA and a law school graduate (JD). He is not a practicing attorney and does not give legal advice. For trust and estate matters, he works alongside your attorney.
