Tax help for Westchester professionals, commuters and families
Many Westchester residents commute into Manhattan on Metro-North or work for employers based in the county. Clients here often have high W-2 income, equity compensation and investment accounts, and families planning for college costs and estates. Living outside the five boroughs means no New York City income tax, but Yonkers has its own city income tax.
Ryan works with clients in Yonkers, White Plains, New Rochelle, Scarsdale, Rye, Mount Vernon, Tarrytown and across the county.
Common situations in Westchester County
Living in Yonkers
Yonkers residents pay a city income tax surcharge, calculated on the New York State return.
Working in Yonkers
If you work in Yonkers but live somewhere else, a nonresident earnings tax applies to the wages you earn there.
Moving out of the city
In the year you move from New York City to Westchester, city tax applies only to the part of the year you lived in the city.
Commuters with equity pay
Working for a Manhattan employer from Westchester means New York State tax only on your wages, but RSUs and bonuses still need planning.

Taxes for Westchester County residents
Westchester residents outside Yonkers do not pay a local income tax, and no one living outside the five boroughs pays New York City resident income tax. Yonkers residents pay a surcharge of 16.75% of their net New York State tax, and people who work in Yonkers but live elsewhere pay a 0.5% nonresident earnings tax on wages earned there.
If you are self-employed and your net earnings from self-employment are over $50,000, you may owe the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax (MCTMT) at 0.34%.
Tax rules and rates change. Confirm the current rules with the tax department before you file, or ask Ryan on your first call.
